“I don’t treat knees, I treat people.” With that, Dr. J. Brad Butler explains his approach to medicine. “I don’t feel I’m treating a shoulder problem or a knee problem,” he says. “I feel like I’m treating the effect of the problem on someone’s life. Treatment options like surgery take personal commitment and time, along with the expense and some risk. It’s important to help people balance those things with a clear understanding of what they hope to gain.” Educated at Tulane University, University of Oklahoma, and University of Zurich, Switzerland, Dr. Butler is fellowship trained in sports medicine, knee, and shoulder surgery. With an expertise in the reconstruction of shoulders, elbows, and knees using arthroscopic techniques, he has always been drawn to the technical problem-solving and intellectual challenges of his profession. Dr. Butler, who practiced with his father for 10 years, is the team physician at Pacific University and Jesuit High School and participates in sports medicine coverage of local, national, and international sporting events. Married with three daughters, he doesn’t hesitate when asked about the best part of his job, saying simply, “You get to fix stuff.”
