Taos Drums, established in 1951, is dedicated to preserving the age-old Native drum making traditions. Nestled at the base of The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Taos Drum originates from the workshops where Native craftsmen from Taos Pueblo meticulously handcraft each drum from natural and renewable resources.
Utilizing wood native to Northern New Mexico like cottonwood, aspen, or pine, the drum frames are sustainably harvested to ensure environmental responsibility. The drum heads, made from cow, deer, elk, or goat hides, are meticulously cleaned, scraped, and hand-scalloped before being stretched and secured with rawhide lacing to the frame, resulting in distinct voices for each drum.
Visitors to Taos Drums can witness the craftsmanship firsthand by taking a free tour of the drum-making workshop and exploring the vast showroom filled with a diverse selection of Indian drums, rawhide furnishings, primitive folk art, ethnic crafts, jewelry, and Zapotec rugs. The experts at Taos Drums can also assist in selecting the perfect drum tailored to specific climates, ensuring a harmonious match for your rhythmic beat.
