Pottawattamie County Historical Society

The Pottawattamie County Historical Society in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is the proud owner and operator of the Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail. Built in 1885, this unique three-story structure is the only one of its kind in existence, featuring revolving pie-shaped cells inside a cage. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the jail offers visitors a well-restored glimpse into a fascinating era of our society, complete with scratched signatures and dates of infamous prisoners on the cell walls. Preserving this one-of-a-kind architectural and cultural gem, the Historical Society provides students and adults with the opportunity to experience firsthand the history and significance of the Squirrel Cage Jail. With only three revolving jails remaining in the country, this museum offers a rare chance to explore a truly remarkable piece of our national heritage.Generated from the website
