The Washington State Department of Transportation, also known as WSDOT, is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state highway system. The department has a staff of more than 7,200 full-time employees is governed by Washington State. It assists in the maintenance and improvement of local roads, railroads and airports. The Washington State Department of Transportation operates over 20 ferry terminals that serve nearly 24 million passengers annually. In addition, the department undertakes various stormwater treatment, fish passage barrier removal, wetland replacement and air pollution control projects. It utilizes computer-aided engineering solutions for designing bridge and structures. The Washington State Department of Transportation issues access connection and commercial vehicle permits.
