Smith Mountain Yacht Club was founded in 1964. This was the same year Smith Mountain Lake had completely filled at the headwaters of the Roanoke and Blackwater rivers. Smith Mountain Lake is the first lake in a chain of four that eventually wind their way down to Ablemarle Sound in North Carolina. The lakes 22, 000 acres and 500 miles of shoreline provide a playground for a variety of water related activities. Smith Mountain Lake has a pump back hydroelectric generation dam, which provides clean water up the east coast while allowing us to recover some water from downstream. Our lake is designated as a zero discharge zone by the EPA and monitored by local colleges to ensure its quality is maintained.
