The Texas Department of Transportation s Abilene District is responsible for planning, designing, operating and maintaining the state s transit system. The Abilene District provides vehicle registration services and renews certificates and drivers licenses through various offices. The district offers a variety of information about statewide road conditions. The Texas Department of Transportation employs more than 13,000 staff members. The department operates a construction division that is responsible for the inspection and testing of development projects. In addition, it governs a public transportation division that provides financial, technical and coordination assistance.
