Mira Milad , MD

Silvia Hafliger, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist trained in helping patients cope with medical illnesses involving organ transplants, cancer, HIV, diabetes, and heart disease. She treats depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and substance abuse. She believes in empowering patients and families so they can collaborate effectively with their medical doctors and optimally manage self-care. Hafliger worked for 19 years at the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. She believes in collaborative and integrative care and started a psychosocial program for transplant patients that included transplant workshops, a post-transplant support group, and the Liver Connection Newsletter. Outside of work, she enjoys speed walking, knitting, and spending time with her dogs.

Carolina Garcia Olmos Calil, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with specific interests in anxiety disorders, mood disorders, cultural psychiatry, women’s mental health, and medical education who values being an empathic listener for her patients. She’s an assistant professor in the Louis A. Faillace, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She is one of the attending physicians supervising the residents in the Third Year Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the medical school and has been involved with multiple research projects at the UTHealth Houston Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders. She also has a leadership role in anxiety care at UT Physicians Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic — BBSB. Originally from Brazil, she completed medical school at Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas do Santa Casa de São Paulo and her general psychiatry residency at Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericordia. As a board-certified psychiatrist in Brazil, she completed extensive clinical work in various challenging settings before moving to the U.S. She then completed a psychiatry residency at McGovern Medical School. She achieved board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Garcia Olmos Calil is fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.

Paul Schulz, M.D., is a professor of neurology at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He received his combined BA-MD degrees from Boston University in 1984. He did a medical internship there, and moved to Baylor College of Medicine for his residency in Neurology. He stayed for a laboratory fellowship in cellular neurophysiology after which he became an assistant professor. Later, he was an associate professor of neurology, neuroscience, and translational biology and molecular medicine. Dr. Schulz was also the vice chair of education for neurology, the deputy chair of the Methodist neurology service, and directed the Cognitive Disorders Clinics at Baylor and the Houston Veterans Administration Hospital. Dementia Program In 2010, Dr. Schulz moved to Mischer Neuroscience Institute, where he sees patients who have cognitive, behavioral, or mood disorders. His group is investigating risk factors for dementia in order to understand why it develops, including both environmental and genetic factors. They use imaging, epidemiologic, and genetic approaches and have identified several risk factors. They are also investigating ways to diagnose dementia earlier, perhaps before symptoms develop, in order to determine whether interventions in the presymptomatic stage might delay or prevent the development of dementia. His group has early data suggesting that the treatment of some risk factors may reduce the probability of developing dementia. Dr. Schulz has received numerous awards and has been an invited speaker at major scientific meetings worldwide. He has been extensively published in the scientific literature and has been featured on television and radio shows.
