Prior to his ophthalmology residency at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center, he served as a regimental surgeon for the Marine Corps during Desert Storm. In 1997, he completed fellowship training in diseases of the retina, and vitreous and intraocular tumors at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia.
