Julia Kharlip, MD

I have expertise in epilepsy, epilepsy neuroimaging, electroencephalography (EEG), and the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy patients. I am the Director of the Penn Epilepsy Center. In addition, I serve as medical director of Penn's Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and Epilepsy Surgical Program. In addition, my research lab focuses on advancing the fields of invasive neurophysiology and neuroimaging to better localize epileptic networks in medication refractory epilepsy patients. It is my hope that improving localization will enable epileptologists to better assign individual patients to the most efficacious therapy, for example, seizure control devices, resective surgery, or continued medical management.

I am originally from Curitiba, Brazil, where I earned my medical degree in 2007 from the Federal University of Paraná, the oldest University in the country. After practicing a few years as a Family Physician in my hometown, I moved to the United States in 2009 to work as a post-doctoral research fellow in Biophysics at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, in Washington, D.C. I then completed my Internal Medicine residency, followed by a year as a Chief Resident, at the Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center program, the largest hospital in our nation's capital. My Cardiology fellowship was then completed in New York, at NYU School of Medicine. Since 2018, I have been at Penn Medicine, where I received my training in cardiac electrophysiology and stayed as an attending physician treating patients with cardiac rhythm disorders.

I am board certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine and practice medical critical care. My clinical expertise is in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute respiratory failure, sepsis and septic shock, and acute organ failure. I am a translational researcher who directs a large molecular cohort study of sepsis to better understand individual ARDS risk, and who seeks to advance precision medicine options for critical illness. I also participate in clinical trials for ARDS and sepsis therapies.
