The William Rea History Museum is owned and operated by the Murfreesboro Historical Association. The building itself dates back to 1790 and is the oldest commercial brick building still standing in North Carolina. It was built by William Rea, a Boston merchant and shipper, who traded extensively between New England and Murfreesboro. In later years, the building was the home of the Ferguson Implement Company, which built the first peanut picker. The Rea Museum houses the Murfreesboro Historical Association's extensive collection of historical artifacts including Native American items, a Gatling Gun which was invented in 1861 by local inventor Richard Jordan Gatling, woodwork salvaged from the Gatling home in nearby Maney's Neck, and a display detailing the career of "Conjure Doctor" Jim Jordan. The Rea Museum is open for private tours and school groups upon request, and it is also open during special events hosted by the Murfreesboro Historical Association.
