Rosa Maria Castillo Schilder, MD

The science and biology of how our bodies and minds worked sparked my initial interest in the field of medicine, but its the personal relationships, life stories and power to help someone in their darkest hours that really drove my desire to become a primary care doctor. I believe in an evidence-based yet patient-centered approach to care and empowering patients to take ownership of their health and wellness. My areas of clinical interest include preventive care, management of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and aging. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, hiking and biking outdoors, and horsing around with my toddler.

I wanted to be a physician since I can remember. The human body intrigued me, and having the knowledge to improve peoples health felt like a super power. I believe in the patients autonomy and shared decision making, cemented on empathy, information and understanding the patients cultural and family background. Outside of work, I like to travel, eat good and new foods, spend time with my husband and daughter, and relax with movies.

I am excited to join the UNC Division of General Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Midwifery in performing high quality, patient-centered care. Outside of medicine, I enjoy reading and spending time with friends, family and their dogs.
