Since early childhood, I knew I wanted a career in medicine. At first I was not sure if my medical career should center around people or pets. At the age of eight, I decided that snakes were much more terrifying than people. That solidified my decision to become a doctor. \n Family medicine and sports medicine are truly the perfect fields for me. They allow me to establish long-term relationships with patients of all ages and navigate their comprehensive health needs. I get to see the entire spectrum of athletes, from recreational athletes having fun with friends to professional athletes whose careers depend on their fitness. I encourage my patients to stay as active as possible and remind them that it's never too late to get in shape. When a 70-year-old adult comes to me wanting to engage in a new exercise program, I do everything I can to encourage as much physical activity as is safely possible. I want to be their cheerleader and their partner in good health. \n I work to stay active in our community while helping our community stay active as well. I am proud to be the medical director for the Carolina Courage professional women's soccer team. I am also the team physician at Middle Creek High School. In both of these settings, I deliver the care athletes need to minimize injury and stay in the game. \n My three amazing children and my wonderful husband get nearly all of my time and attention outside of work. We love to ski in the winter and boat in the summer and attend all sorts of sports together year-round. As a former collegiate soccer player, I never imagined myself being an all-star cheer mom, but I love it! I also enjoy watching my son play baseball and ice hockey, and look forward to his band concerts. In my spare time, running is my passion; I completed my first marathon in 2015, and have continued running ever since.

I love that my career affords me an opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients. My approach is to listen closely to them and then use evidence-based guidance to formulate an individualized care plan together. \n Combining family and sports medicine allows me to care for people in a way that encompasses their whole health over many decades. I place a heavy emphasis on exercise and activity, since both are crucial to good health and well-being. \n My personal journey with fitness did not start until age 12 when I joined the local swim team in my hometown in the Chicago suburbs. Since then, getting regular exercise has been part of my life, and it's had a profound impact on my physical and mental well-being. \n I love working with athletes in all capacities. I've worked as a team physician for both the Carolina Mudcats (minor league baseball) and Cary High School and also have a passion for working with local endurance athletes. I first met my husband training for a triathlon and we stay active in that pursuit as our schedules allow. \n I am happily married with a daughter and two grown stepchildren. I've lived in North Carolina since 2014 and love the ability to be outdoors throughout the year - which is impossible in Chicago - as well as our proximity to the mountains and beach. We love travel and visit Asheville and Surf City regularly. In addition to being passionate about staying active, I'm also passionate about cooking (mostly) healthy food. I love to try new recipes, but I also enjoy trying new restaurants whenever I have the opportunity.

I grew up in rural Alamosa, Colorado, and embrace the small-town doctor mindset. That includes building lifelong relationships with patients, serving others and giving back to my community. I deeply appreciate and respect the privilege - and responsibility - that comes with being a doctor and strive to have a positive, enduring impact on all my patients. \n Medicine is a calling for me. I consider it a privilege to care for patients, families, teams and my community. My goal is to treat each patient as if they were a family member. I seek to educate, guide and provide appropriate interventions to help patients optimize their health, wellness and well-being. \n While I'm a primary care doctor at heart, my lifelong passion has been athletics. As a 12-year-old, I suffered a complex ankle fracture, and my treatment and recovery triggered a passion for sports medicine that continues today. \n Sports medicine is a natural complement to primary care. My areas of interest include sports-related concussions, baseball arm injuries/arm care and optimizing lifestyle to promote health, wellness and longevity. \n In high school, I was a state champion wrestler and an all-state linebacker. At Dartmouth College, I was an academic All-America linebacker, as well as co-captain and team MVP. The National Football Foundation named me one of the top 15 scholar football players in America in 1994. During my residency and fellowship at Moses Cone Hospital, I was recognized as one of the top 20 family practice residents in America. \n In 2008, I helped establish - and serve as medical director for - the Carolina Sports Concussion Clinic (CSCC), which offers comprehensive evaluation and leading-edge treatment of sports concussions. It's grown into one of the busiest sports concussion clinics in the country. \n CSCC has conducted six clinical studies, including one of the largest community-based studies of pediatric concussions to date, and a nationwide study in conjunction with Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. I've also authored or co-authored dozens of studies and articles on concussions in student athletes. \n I'm also team physician and medical director for the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, co-chief medical officer and head team physician for USA Baseball and team physician for Apex Friendship High School. In addition, I chair USA Baseball's Health & Sports Performance Oversight Committee and serve on the NHL Team Physician Society Executive Committee, the NHL/NHL Players Association Joint Concussion Subcommittee and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. \n In my free time, I love being with my family - wife, Dr. Carie Bloom, and our three children - as well as our two dogs. I enjoy travel, good food and all sorts of outdoor activities.
