Alena J. Markmann, MD, PhD

As an academic interventional radiologist, I am focused on advancing the field of minimally invasive procedures to provide the latest and most innovative care to patients. With an interest in interventional oncology, pain, and vascular diseases, I have endeavored to help patients of all socioeconomic backgrounds by providing proactive and holistic solutions to complex medical problems. As a Latino fluent in Spanish who was raised in the rural south USA and abroad, I have found it extremely rewarding to provide advanced medical care to the underserved patient populations and am looking forward to expanding that outreach by working with UNC’s team both locally and abroad. I am a urologist who specializes in taking care of patients with genitourinary cancers and runs a translational research lab. With the various treatment options available for patients with urologic cancers, I enjoy working with patients to identify the treatment choice that optimizes both their cancer outcome and personal goals. My research focuses on using genomic analysis of bladder and kidney tumors to learn more about alterations in the tumor and surrounding cells to improve treatment decisions and patient outcomes.

My primary role is as a nurse practitioner in the UNC Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program, where I see patients that range from 13 to 39 years old.
