Founded in 1939 by Otto Kallir, the Galerie St. Etienne in New York has served as a prominent venue for Austrian and German Expressionism, as well as for self-taught artists from both America and Europe. The gallery was notably the exclusive representative of Anna Mary Robertson, known as Grandma Moses, from her first solo exhibition in 1940 until its closure in 2020.
Although the gallery has closed its physical exhibition space, it continues to represent contemporary artist Sue Coe and maintains a select inventory of works by renowned artists such as Gustav Klimt, Max Beckmann, and Egon Schiele, among others. The Kallir Research Institute, a non-profit foundation established in 2017, has taken over the gallery's library archives and scholarly activities, preserving its rich legacy in the art world.
