The Niagara Hospice, located in Lockport, N.Y., treats the patients and provides care to terminally ill individuals. Its social workers provide individual and family counseling and supportive health teachings. The care center also offers professionally facilitated support groups for patients, family members and friends. The hospice care center offers acupuncture, art, massage, music and pet therapies for its patients. Its art therapy provides an additional tool for patients to help express their feelings and goals through their own creativity. The massage therapy helps relieve symptoms and relaxes the patient s body and mind from various symptoms, such as anxiety, tension, depression, insomnia, stress, back pain, headache, muscle pain and some forms of chronic pain. The Niagara Hospice also incorporates animal assisted activities commonly known as pet therapies that help in reducing blood pressure and anxiety, increasing mental alertness and attention skills of the hospice patients.
