Located in New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is a public-benefit corporation, chartered by the New York state legislature in 1965. It provides transportation services to the residents of New York City. It operates one of North America's largest transportation networks that serves a population of more than 15 million people in an area of over 5,000 square miles. Its transportation network has more than 75 accessible subways and commuter rail stations with features that improve accessibility for customers with visual, hearing and mobility impairments. In addition, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority also offers rebuilding services. With funding by the federal, state and local governments, and by the issuance of bonds, the authority maintains and repairs subways, railroads and bus fleets.
