John Mahlstedt, MD

Dr. Spellun completed her undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature with honors at New York University. She went on to earn her medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine, New York State/American Program of Tel Aviv University. Dr. Spellun completed her internship and adult psychiatry residency training at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine where she was awarded the New York Weill Cornell Medicine Alumni Council Distinguished Housestaff Award for the Department of Psychiatry in 2018 for all-around clinical excellence. During residency, she pursued additional psychotherapy training in multiple modalities including short and long term psychodynamic psychotherapy, supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and group psychotherapy. After residency, she chose to build additional expertise to work with under-served populations and people with complex health needs by completing the Public Psychiatry Fellowship at New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Spellun currently serves as the Mental Health Director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Wellness Qlinic, a medical student and trainee-run free mental health clinic serving LGBTQ identified individuals. She lectures to medical students at Weill Cornell Medical College and psychiatry residents at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine on a wide range of topics including general adult psychiatry, LGBTQ mental health, and social determinants of health. She also supervises junior psychiatry residents in training.Dr. Spellun believes in an integrative and holistic approach to psychiatric illness which is attuned to the biological, psychological, and social contributions to symptoms and distress. She is sensitive to cultural factors which may influence patient preferences in their treatment and strives to provide recovery oriented care which helps individuals achieve satisfaction in their goals and reach their full potential.

Dr. Dimitris Kiosses completed his undergraduate degree at Tufts University and received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies of Adelphi University. He completed his internship at Hillside Hospital-Long Island Jewish Medical Center and has been working at the Weill Cornell Medicine Institute for Geriatric Psychiatry since 1997. Dr. Kiosses is a NY State licensed psychologist and has been trained in Cognitive Therapy at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research. He is certified in Problem Solving Therapy and Supportive Psychotherapy.Dr. Kiosses' research focuses on the development of psychosocial interventions for middle-aged and older adults with depression, suicidal ideation, chronic pain or cognitive impairment. He has developed psychosocial interventions for vulnerable patients, including patients who have been hospitalized for suicidal ideation or suicide attempt, patients with major depression and cognitive impairment, patients with negative emotions and chronic pain, and patients who have been discharged after ECT treatment. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Aging, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Brain and Research Foundation, and Alzheimer's Association. Dr. Kiosses has developed Problem Adaptation Therapy (PATH), an emotion regulation psychosocial intervention for older adults with depression and cognitive impairment, which aims to reduce depression and disability in this population. PATH focuses on improving the functioning of older adults with cognitive deficits in their actual environment. PATH therapists use environmental adaptation tools (i.e. signs, calendar, notes) to help older adults with cognitive deficits bypass their functional and cognitive limitation and incorporate caregiver or family member involvement, if necessary. After completing training in general psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Matthew Shear completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was Chief Fellow during his final year.
