My career began at Beth Israel Medical Center/Continuum Health Partners in Manhattan, as a Physician-Scientist at that institution s newly established Institute for Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer. I developed a basic science research laboratory, collaborating with senior investigators at the NYU School of Dental Medicine. My research was funded through a combination of national society and private foundation career development awards, and resulted in several publications, nationally recognized basic science research in head and neck oncology, and several national presentations and awards. In 2007, I was hired as Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ), in the early years of the (then) North Shore-LIJ Health System and North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute. In this role I helped to establish one of the first fully integrated multidisciplinary oncology programs in our growing health system dedicated to the initial evaluation, care and survivorship of cancer patients, specifically those with head and neck tumors. The Head and Neck Oncology Program at Northwell has now evolved into one of regional as well as national renown, with the ability to deliver sophisticated multidisciplinary surgical and nonsurgical head and neck oncologic care at multiple sites throughout our network. Our clinical team also maintains a close collaboration with leading senior basic science investigators at Northwell's Feinstein Institute, focusing on HPV-associated oropharynx cancer. In 2014, I was appointed Northwell Health Cancer Institute s first Director of Surgical Oncology, and served in this position until early 2019. In the Spring of 2019, I was appointed Director of Operations of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. In this capacity I serve as the liaison between the Institute, its members, and the various hospitals and outpatient cancer treatment facilities throughout the Northwell network where cancer care is delivered. In 2015, I was appointed Chair of LIJ s Commission on Cancer (CoC) recognized Cancer Committee. In this role I have worked with clinical and administrative colleagues to better integrate the inpatient cancer activities and resources of LIJ and North Shore University Hospital with those of our outpatient Cancer Institute facilities. I am presently involved in defining and solidifying Cancer Institute oversight over inpatient cancer related resources and activities, as well as CoC standards. My clinical leadership and program building accomplishments have been recognized both regionally as well as nationally with an American Cancer Society Doctor of Distinction Award (2017), an American Head and Neck Society Presidential Citation (2017), and a position on the Advanced Training Council of the American Head and Neck Society.

Bhuvanesh Singh, MD - Northwell Health-Skin Cancer Program

Bhuvanesh Singh, MD, is surgical director of the Skin Cancer Program at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. A board-certified otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon with extensive experience in oncological and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Singh joined Northwell in September 2024. Prior to Northwell, Dr. Singh was a professor and attending surgeon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. He earned his medical degree at SUNY Health Science Center and a PhD in medial molecular biology from the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Dr. Singh has developed novel surgical approaches that improve cure rates while decreasing side effects. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Singh is actively involved in research to advance the field in a way that benefits patients. He's published over 190 articles in major journals, is a co-editor of two medical textbooks, and has received numerous research grants. Currently, a compound he's developed related to a cancer gene is being utilized by a pharmaceutical company and is likely to go into clinical trials. All of my training is built around the type of care I want to deliver and the connections I want to create with my patients, says Dr. Singh. Clearly, providing the best medical treatment is essential for cancer, but for me, care is about making sure patients are emotionally healthy and feel supported. The mental aspect of cancer can be just as challenging as the physical changes. To ensure that patients focus on wellbeing, Dr. Singh uses an approach built on humor, and often kicks off consultations by making jokes. He might say that it's his first day as a doctor or that he's never done a procedure before, but I watched one on YouTube last night, so how hard can it be? despite having performed almost 10,000 operations in his 27 years as a surgeon. Making patients feel at ease through laughter builds trust, he says, and helps patients become active participants in their own treatment. He sees his patients as part of the whole team involved in their care. We have such an incredible health team here where everyone contributes to care, so bringing the patient on to that team is empowering for them.Everything I do is about enhancing cancer care for patients, and giving them more options, he says. Whether that's through research or some well-timed jokes, it's all about lowering their stress and supporting their emotional wellbeing. I try to plant seeds of hope, so they believe in their care as much as I do.

Antonio Escolar Alfonso, MD

Antonio Alfonso, MD, is vice chair of surgery and director of surgical education at Northwell Health. He specializes in head and neck endocrine surgery and sees patients with thyroid and parathyroid tumors. Dr. Alfonso’s father, a surgeon and academic, had a big influence on his son’s career choice. “My father was disciplined and ethical, and the type of doctor I wanted to be,” he says. Today, Dr. Alfonso has more than 50 years of surgical experience behind him and has trained hundreds of surgical residents. Dr. Alfonso earned his medical degree at the University of the Philippines and completed his residency in general surgery at Temple University Hospital. He continued his training with a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He arrived at Northwell in 2017 from State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, where he was a distinguished teaching professor and Clarence & Mary Dennis chair of the department of surgery. The safe and effective surgical removal of thyroid and parathyroid tumors with excellent cosmetic results is Dr. Alfonso’s standard of care. He values team-based treatment plans and routinely works with nuclear medicine imaging specialists, endocrinologists, other head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists. They meet on a weekly basis to discuss strategies for managing especially complex tumors. Dr. Alfonso has served in numerous regional and national leadership positions; he has served as governor-at-large of the American College of Surgeons and as president of the New York Surgical Society, New York Head and Neck Society, Tri-Borough Directors of Surgery Association and president of the New York Cancer Society. Dr. Alfonso has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and textbook chapters. Earlier in his career, he was instrumental in developing bloodless surgery for cancer patients, an approach that avoids blood transfusions during procedures. He has also received the distinction of meeting the Castle Connelly Top Doctor criteria for 20 consecutive years. For Dr. Alfonso, establishing long-term relationships with his patients is one of the best parts of his job. “I really get to know people,” he says. “In fact, patients from years ago call me up—I still have the same cell phone number—asking me to see a family member. That’s the type of practice I have.”

Manish A. Vira, MD

Manish Vira, MD, is a urologist at Northwell Health and the chief of urology at the Northwell Cancer Institute. He is also an associate professor of urology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He performs a wide array of surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and leads research in the development of diagnostic and surgical methods for urological cancers. "I knew I'd be a physician since I was young," he says. "Early in college, I spent time in India working at hospital camps, where I was exposed to surgery, and had my first experience in the operating room. It was inspiring to see that work, and I knew I wanted to be part of helping people in the same way."While attending Weill Medical College of Cornell University, he became interested in the surgical techniques involved with urology, particularly the use of technology and minimally invasive procedures in the field. He honed his surgical skills during residencies at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and deepened his interest in oncology with a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute. Since joining Northwell in 2007, he has helped expand cancer care across the region so that patients can access expert clinical services no matter where they live. That reduces the amount of travel patients need to undertake for high-level cancer care. Dr. Vira was also part of the surgical team that was the first in the area to use a single-port robotic system, which enables complex procedures to be done through a single, small incision. What appeals to him most, however, isn't any type of procedure or innovation-it's patient relationships. "Most of us who go into urology are drawn to the connection we have with patients," he says. "We don't just do a surgery and that's it. In urology, the relationship generally lasts the rest of their life, so there's a primary care aspect. You get to know them, their families, their lives."Every patient situation is unique, he adds, just as every cancer is unique in how it presents in that patient. Dr. Vira looks not just at the disease, but at the patient as a whole in order to understand needs, goals and desires. "That's what personal care is all about," he says. "You get the right treatment to the right patient."
