My Brother's Keeper, based in Shakopee, Minn., is a family-operated nonprofit organization that provides services for mentally and physically disabled individuals. Established in 1989, it serves all of Minnesota, concentrating on the seven-county Metropolitan Twin Cities area. The heart of its program is the relationship developed between the patient and personal care attendant. Its experienced caregivers, who are skilled in the care of multihandicapped individuals, work with the family to assist in daily personal care and hygiene, accompany the patient for medical treatment and therapeutics and assist with administering medications. Its development program focuses on help needed in the home. It also operates a home for residents who are developmentally disabled and other homes for residents with mental illness. All the homes are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has a van for transportation of residents to medical and dental appointments and group activities.
