Steam Railroading Institute

The Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, MI is dedicated to preserving and educating the public about steam-era railroading in Michigan and the Great Lakes Region. They offer a variety of events and excursions throughout the year, including the popular North Pole Express, where visitors can experience a nostalgic journey to the Christmas of yesteryear aboard the world-famous Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive.

With their mission to maintain and operate steam locomotives, the Institute is home to the largest steam locomotive ever used in Michigan, Pere Marquette 1225, and is currently restoring the Chicago and North Western 175 locomotive. Visitors can also explore the site of the former Ann Arbor Railroad's steam shops and roundhouse, getting a firsthand look at the restoration, maintenance, and operation of railroading equipment from the golden age of steam.
