Dr. Ryan was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated from Comstock High School in 1975 and then attended Western Michigan University where he majored in chemistry, minored in biomedical sciences and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 3 years. From there, he went to Wayne State University School of Medicine and graduated in 1983 at the top of his class with ?high distinction? and also was voted by his classmates to receive the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the medical school and his class. Dr. Ryan completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at Borgess and Bronson Hospitals in the S.M.A.H.E.C program, which is now affiliated with the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. During his residency, he did a 2-month elective at Johns Hopkins on joint replacement. He earned his initial board certification in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1990 and has been practicing in Kalamazoo for 30 years. During his recertification exam he achieved the 100th percentile - the highest score in the country. For 5 years he has served as an examiner for the oral examination for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Ryan does general orthopedic surgery but his areas of special interest include total joint replacement, especially hip and knee, and hip preservation surgery, including arthroscopy and osteotomies. He is the most proud of his family including his wife of 38 years, Deb, whom he met in high school and his 3 boys, Jason, a vascular surgeon at Borgess, Christopher, an attorney in Detroit, and Sean, an orthopedic surgery resident at Duke, along with their wives and 4 grandchildren.
