Dr. Badaki-Makun's overarching clinical and research focus is on the care of the acutely ill or injured child. Her early research career centered on improving resuscitation outcomes in pediatric patients in cardiopulmonary arrest. For this early work, she was awarded both the American Academy of Pediatrics Ken Graff Young Investigator and the American Heart Association Resuscitation Science Symposium Young Investigator Awards. She continues her work in resuscitation in the clinical and educational arenas.Her recent research centers on enhancing the diagnosis and management of acute complications in patients with sickle cell disease. She is the recipient of a K12 Career Development Award in Hematology for her research dedicated to enhancing the early diagnosis and management of acute chest syndrome in sickle cell patients using novel radiographic and serum biomarkers. As part of this K12 Award, she is completing her PhD in Clinical Investigation at the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Jeanne S. Sheffield, MD

Dr. Jeanne Sheffield is the director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and a professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Her areas of clinical and research expertise include medical and surgical complications of pregnancy with a focus on infectious diseases and immunizations in pregnancy. Dr. Sheffield earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She did her residency in obstetrics and gynecology there, and then completed a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2015. Dr. Sheffield serves on a number of national boards and committees. She is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Gynecologic and Obstetrics Society, the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the Infectious Disease Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is currently on the board of directors for the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and serves on the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She works with the National Institutes of Health on national grant reviews and safety monitoring boards, and has served on several working groups focusing on improving the pregnancy research infrastructure. She acts as a pregnancy consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is an active member of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee. Dr. Sheffield has published many articles in obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine journals, and written numerous textbook chapters. She is currently an editor of Williams Obstetrics, the definitive obstetrics textbook used worldwide. She is a journal reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals in her specialty.
