Emily Boss, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S. (nee Rudnick) is director of pediatric otolaryngology and a professor of otolaryngology, pediatrics, and health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Boss's clinical expertise includes pediatric sinus, ear, nose, neck, and throat conditions. Dr. Boss trained at the University of California Los Angeles, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Boss is dedicated to improving health outcomes through enhanced doctor-patient communication and organizational change. She is a federally-funded clinician scientist with research focused on patient and family-centered communication, health disparities, and surgical utilization and outcomes. She is the Medical Director for Revenue Cycle Performance Improvement for Johns Hopkins Medicine and a Physician Advisor for Care Coordination and Clinical Resource Management at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Nirmish Singla is an Associate Professor of Urology and Oncology in the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins University, where he serves as the Director of Translational Research in Genitourinary Oncology. He is also the Director of the Kidney Cancer Program and co-directs the Upper Tract Urothelial Cancer (UTUC) Program as a founding member of the first-ever UTUC Multidisciplinary Clinic. He represents the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Testicular Cancer Guidelines Panel and helps lead the Testicular Cancer Program. He serves the Brady in a leadership capacity as Vice Chair and Physician Advisor for Quality, Safety, & Service; Faculty Senator for the Department of Urology; and as a core faculty member for the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative (HBHI).Dr. Singla received his undergraduate degree (B.S.E.) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan and his medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Michigan Medical School, where he was supported by a full-tuition Dean’s Merit Scholarship. He went on to complete his residency training in Urologic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). Following his residency, he received an NIH/NCI Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award T32 grant and spent an additional year at UTSW as a postdoctoral research fellow in Urologic Oncology with a specialized translational focus in kidney cancer through the Physician Scientist Training Program. During this time, he earned a Master of Science in Clinical Science (M.S.C.S.) degree through the Center for Translational Medicine at UTSW and helped develop and pioneer a Physician Administrative Fellowship program. He then completed an advanced surgical fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York through the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins.Dr. Singla’s clinical practice spans the complete spectrum of genitourinary oncology, including adrenal, kidney, upper tract, bladder, prostate, penile, urethral, and testicular cancers. His surgical approaches include mastery of both open and minimally-invasive (endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic) techniques. Dr. Singla provides personalized and compassionate care for patients affected by urologic cancer by integrating cutting-edge technologies and multidisciplinary approaches to treatment.As both a surgeon-scientist and clinical trialist, Dr. Singla’s overarching goal is to help scientific discoveries in the laboratory materialize for patients with urologic cancers in the clinic. He runs a well-funded, multidisciplinary, translational laboratory specializing in kidney cancer, testicular cancer, and UTUC. Dr. Singla has co-authored over 200 articles and textbook chapters, and he has developed an international reputation as a thought leader in urologic oncology. He has secured a substantial amount of research funding and serves as the lead PI on multiple grants from federal, foundational, intramural, and private sources across various GU malignancies.

David E. Tunkel, MD

Pediatric otolaryngologist David Tunkel specializes in the treatment of airway disorders in children, including obstructive sleep apnea, congenital or acquired abnormalities of the larynx and trachea, and infections of the upper airway, as well as common infections of the ears, nose and throat. He also treats children who need surgery for chronic otitis media, conductive hearing loss and cholesteatoma, and is nationally known for treating children with special needs, including those with cleft palate, Down syndrome, short-stature skeletal dysplasias and neuromotor diseases. A leader in developing evidence-based guidelines to provide optimal care for children with ear, nose and throat diseases, Dr. Tunkel has conducted research that showed the success of new methods of subtotal tonsillectomy in treating sleep-disordered breathing, with improved recovery for many children. Dr. Tunkel earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he remained for residency training in otolaryngology. He completed fellowship training in pediatric otolaryngology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and served as the director of pediatric otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins for 30 years. He is chair of the Guideline Taskforce for the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and was the lead developer for guidelines on tinnitus and nosebleed management. In addition, he is an editorial board member for JAMA Otolaryngology. Dr. Tunkel has served as chair of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and was the chairperson of the otolaryngology section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has been a board member for the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, and has participated in clinical practice guideline development for major national organizations, recently serving on committees for acute otitis media and the use of tympanostomy tubes. Dr. Tunkel has been recognized by Baltimore magazine as a “Top Doctor,” and has received various accolades, including honor awards from the Maryland Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.
