History

The Mary Anderson Center was founded in 1989 by the Mount St. Francis Friary to provide time and space for artists to concentrate and work. The name and inspiration for the Center came from 19th century stage actress Mary Anderson, who originally owned the 400+ acres and donated the land to the Friars to conserve the meadows, woods and lake. For more than 25 years the mission of the Mary Anderson Center has been to provide time and place where artists can concentrate and work. Each year talented, gifted artists come to the Center. Here, in the serenity of the southern Indiana hills, they work to inspire and expand their own artistic vision. Artists who come to the Mount can have a private room, studio space and the freedom to explore the 400+ acres of fields, woods, and lake. Come, be inspired and get your creative juices flowing for a day or a week or even longer. You'll be glad you did!
