Dr. Kapoor considered engineering and economics careers before becoming a scribe in an emergency room during college. A scribe is someone who follows the provider into every patient room and charts the patient's history and chief complaint for their visit. “That experience sold me on medicine because I was working directly with patients. That’s the big difference between being in healthcare and other careers I considered.” Dr. Kapoor’s father taught him the importance of work ethic and perseverance. He relies on both as he provides care in the Intensive Care Unit. “ICU medicine is fast paced, you have to think critically all the time, you can see the results of treatment quickly and there is a high-level of comradery among the care team. I like that. I am also suited for the often-chaotic ICU environment because I am very calm in general, and I understand people’s emotional distress pretty well.” Outside the ICU, Dr. Kapoor enjoys photography and cooking. If he wasn’t a doctor, he probably would have gone to culinary school. “There are stories and memories associated with food. People never forget who feeds them.”

Surrounded by medicine as a child – with a mother who was a gynecologist and other family members who were cardiologists and surgeons – Maha Mumtaz came to love the profession. “Growing up and seeing them really inspired me to want to help people and move into the field of medicine.” She chose internal medicine for its variety. “I enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, getting to know them personally and treating different medical issues. Making people feel better always makes me feel good.” During her residency training, Dr. Mumtaz cared for intensive care unit patients, which helped her prepare for her work at Blessing as a hospitalist. “I learned to respond rapidly, that anything can change at any time and time is everything.” Among her many hobbies is art. Dr. Mumtaz began participating in drawing competitions at a young age and developed her skills to the point where her work has been used by an organization that makes a coloring book for people living with dementia.
