Prairie Wolf Slough is a 435-acre nature preserve located in Highland Park, IL. It features a 20-acre wetland, wet prairie, and oak woodlands, as well as a 1.75-mile trail for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. The preserve is known for its restoration efforts, with hundreds of volunteers helping to transform an old agricultural field into a habitat for native species.
In the early 1970s, the Lake County Forest Preserves acquired 150 acres of land north of Old Mill Road, and additional land was purchased between 1976 and 1979. Prairie Wolf Slough is a haven for wildlife, with over 61,000 plants planted to provide habitat for birds, frogs, turtles, and other animals. Visitors are encouraged to keep dogs leashed and on trails, and a separate entrance is available for the Prairie Wolf Dog Park, which requires a permit for entry.
