The Honolulu Zoo Society is a nonprofit organization that supports and advocates environmental education, biological study, and recreational and conservation activities at the Honolulu Zoo. The organization works with the city administration and the city council. It educates the public about the importance of wildlife and conservation issues. The Honolulu Zoo Society provides capital improvements to the zoo through fundraising campaigns. Founded in 1969 as the Zoo Hui, the society has more than 8,000 members. It employs a staff of over 10 people and operates the Planned Giving program to establish an endowment fund for the zoo. The society is funded by grants and fees charged for participation in educational programs. The Honolulu Zoo Society also helps to support conferences on animal research.
