For the traveler looking to explore the beauty of Miami off the beaten path, look no further than Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. As home to one of America's top ten beaches and the oldest building in Greater Miami, its one of the best places to revel in fantastic views of Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is a flawless blend of the tropics and nature, and history. From frolicking in the white sands, wading in the water, or enjoying the beauty of a nature trail, you'll enjoy the unrefined wonder of South Florida and away from the boisterous crowds.

At this park, you'll get more than just a day at the beach.

Must see and must do at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
You MUST go to the beach. For at least a decade, it's been ranked one of the top ten beach in the U.S. by national experts, including "Dr. Beach". The beach is a mile and a half long, and glistens like a diamond under the sun. Its unspoiled beachfront is a relaxing way to enjoy the South Florida weather. The best part: no large crowds.

You MUST visit the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse. Guided tours are provided four days a week (Thursday through Monday) and you can even climb to the top of the lighthouse and take in a gorgeous panoramic view of the Greater Miami area.

Best and worst time to go to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
Anytime outside of hurricane season is an excellent time to go to this state park. South Florida enjoys balmy weather most of the year, so virtually every day is a great day to go to the beach. Even on a rare chilly day, taking a hike or walking along the nature trail is a great way to warm up and still enjoy the outdoors.

The absolute worst time to go to this park is if there is an impending hurricane. That may seem obvious, but it bears repeating. With the park being on an island, it's very susceptible to significant damage during a strong storm (evident in the devastation left behind by Hurricane Andrew in 1992). A hurricane warning will most like prompt closing of the park and full evacuation, anyway.

Admission to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
Entrance fees to the park are charged by pedestrian, single occupant vehicle, or multiple occupant vehicles, ranging from $2-$10. For an additional fee, patrons can access the picnic pavilions, camping, kayaking and more.

Wildlife at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
Various species of birds can be found throughout the year at the park, which is part of the South Florida Bird Observatory network. The Cape Florida Banding Station serves as a major stop for birds migrating south during the winter.

Insider tip for Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
The park only allows camping for community organizations or sponsored groups, particularly youth groups. According to the Florida State Parks website, "An organized group of six or more people camping together who are members of, or who are sponsored by, a recognized, registered, non-profit organization or recognized community organization . . ."
