Seafarers Yacht Club of DC

The Seafarers Yacht Club, established in 1945 as the Seafarers Boat Club, is the oldest African American yacht club in the United States. Located on the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, the club was founded by Lewis T. Green, Sr., a wood carver and vocational arts teacher, who built boats as a hobby and sought a place to dock them. With the support of influential figures like Mary McLeod Bethune and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Green was able to secure the land and establish the club, which has since become known for its commitment to boating safety and community service.

Over the years, the Seafarers Yacht Club has grown and evolved, merging with the D.C. Mariners Boat Club in 1965. The club's members have worked diligently to improve the marshy land, constructing docks and a clubhouse. In 1985, they initiated the Seafarers Yacht Club Annual Cleanup, which has now transformed into the annual Anacostia River Cleanup Day, held each spring. With a rich history and a dedication to both boating and community, the Seafarers Yacht Club continues to be a prominent institution in Washington, DC.
