The Amalgamated Transit Union, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is an organization that represents transit workers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1892, the union includes more than 170,000 members through over 250 local unions. Its members include bus drivers, rail operators, municipal employees, and maintenance and clerical personnel. The union deals with rights of public transit workers that include wages, working conditions, pension benefits, seniority, vacation, travel passes, and sick and personal leaves. It also provides a variety of services to senior citizens, people with disabilities and those affiliated with union members. The union conducts seminars to discuss health, safety and women issues and offers leadership training to members. In addition, Amalgamated Transit Union publishes a bimonthly magazine, In Transit, that provides information about the union and the transit industry.
