When you arrive at the sleep center, you will meet the technologist who will be present during the entire study. Your technologist will show you to a private bedroom where you can change into your sleeping attire. The technologist will explain the procedure while applying the monitoring devices, which takes approximately one hour.Several small sensors are placed on your scalp, face, chest, abdomen, and legs. The sensors monitor brain waves (EEG), respiratory effort, oxygen levels, muscle tone, leg movements, snoring, heart rate, (EKG) and eye movements. The wires are long enough for you to find a comfortable sleeping position. After the technologist finishes applying the electrodes, you will have a chance to relax before bedtime. You are welcome to bring reading material or a laptop. If you need assistance, you can page the technologist.Your technologist oversees the recordings during the night from computer monitors located outside the room. In the morning, you will be awakened between 5:30-6:00a.m. If you need to wake up earlier, please inform the technologist. But we must be able to collect at least six hours of recordable data. Our staff will do everything possible to make your stay comfortable.
