In July 1952 Carlsbad, Calif., became an incorporated city and hired its first chief of police. The chief was the only member of the department and had a desk at the State Parks and Recreations Department. The Carlsbad Police Department has grown to a total of nearly 150 personnel that includes more than 100 sworn officers and less than 40 non-sworn employees.
