Navajo Abandoned Mine Lands (NAML) is a department established in 1988 by the Navajo Nation to address the reclamation of abandoned mine lands in the Navajo Nation geographical area, which spans over 26,000 square miles across northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico. With the authority granted by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), NAML focuses on reclaiming both coal and non-coal mines, including uranium, copper, and other minerals, through a dedicated and committed staff.

Since its inception, NAML has successfully reclaimed numerous abandoned mines, including coal, uranium, and copper sites, ensuring the protection of public health, safety, and property from the adverse effects of past mining practices. In addition to reclamation efforts, NAML also implements Public Facility Projects (PFP) to stimulate economic development in communities impacted by mining activities, providing funding for the renovation and construction of public infrastructure such as senior citizens centers, chapter buildings, utilities, roads, and recreation facilities.
