Poker Flat Research Range is the largest land-based rocket research range in the world and the only high-latitude rocket range in the United States. Located in Fairbanks, Alaska, the range offers scientists from around the world the opportunity to launch rockets and study the arctic atmosphere and ionosphere. With special permission from federal, state, and tribal landowners, rockets can fly over the sparsely populated tundra, providing ample opportunities to examine the aurora in the region.
Operated by the University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute under contract to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, Poker Flat Research Range is home to many scientific instruments and hosts most sounding rocket launches between January and March. With its strategic location beneath the auroral oval, the range attracts researchers and offers a unique platform for studying the mysteries of the aurora.
