Huntsville Emergency Medical Service is a nonprofit corporation that provides ambulance service for more than 300,000 citizens in Alabama. It staffs over 200 employees. The corporation, also known as HEMS, is certified by the Commission on Accredited Ambulance Services (CAAS). Ability-Plus is a nonprofit organization that provides services to people with mental disabilities. It offers residential placement services by contracting through the state and quasi-state agencies. Ability-Plus offers Medicaid-certified programs through the Department of Human Resources. In addition, it provides short-term care services for people in crisis situations. Ability-Plus also offers respite, day habilitation and personal care services to families of people with challenging behavioral issues, developmental delays, autism and extreme medical concerns. It additionally provides personal care attendants who provide assistance with bathing, toileting, meal preparation, eating, recreational activities and extension of therapies and exercises.
