Over eleven days, the Cranger Kirmes attracts around four million visitors to the fairground on the Rhine-Herne Canal every year. Always on the first Friday in August, the mayor of Herne opens the largest fair in North Rhine-Westphalia. The opening ceremony in the Crange festival hall includes the traditional tapping of the barrel and the cry "Piel op no Crange!" followed by eleven gun salutes.
