The Islamic Association of Nova Scotia (IANS), established in 1966, is one of the oldest Muslim organizations in Canada, originally known as the Islamic Association of the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Founded by six Muslim immigrants, it became the first legally registered Islamic organization in the Maritimes, with its initial gatherings held in members' homes.
In 1971, the association completed the construction of its first mosque in Dartmouth, which is believed to be one of the first mosques in Canada built from scratch on land owned by Muslims. Over the years, IANS has expanded its activities to include religious and social programs, catering to the growing needs of the Muslim community in the region.
